✅ How This Trench Drain System Works (Simple Explanation)
This setup is a trench drain (also called a channel drain). It collects surface water and directs it safely away from the building. Here’s how it works:

1. Water flows into the drain grate.
Rainwater, driveway runoff, or roof water travels across concrete and enters the long metal grate on the surface.
2. Water enters the trench channel below.
Beneath the grate is a long, narrow trough that collects the water.

3. Water flows through the PVC exit pipe.
At the end of the trench is a PVC outlet pipe that connects to:
a storm drain,
a dry well,
a French drain, or
a drainage ditch.
This pipe carries the water away from the foundation.

4. The concrete holds the drain in place.
Fresh concrete is formed around the trench drain using wood framing so it stays level and strong.

5. Gravel provides structure and drainage.
Gravel under and around the system:
improves stability
prevents erosion
allows excess water around the trench to drain
